Shamieka's Story

Shamieka Rhinehart is a proud native of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Shamieka was reared in the Little Raleigh community by her grandmother, who was retired, and mother, who was working class. As the oldest of two children, Shamieka was determined to excel academically and be an exemplary role model for her younger brother. Her grandmother and mother instilled the values of hard work, a quality education and compassion for her fellow human. 

Advancing her education after completing Nash County Public Schools, Shamieka graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997 and entered North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1998. Following graduation from law school in 2001, Shamieka proudly made Durham her home.

Over 18 years of Legal Experience in the Court System

Shamieka began her legal career as an associate attorney with the late Willie R. Perry, Jr. In 2005, she became an assistant district attorney at the Durham District Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, Shamieka worked hard to obtain just outcomes in her cases and justice for victims of crimes. Her work ethic enabled her to earn several prestigious leadership positions within the District Attorney’s Office including, domestic violence prosecutor, property and fraud team supervisor. In 2012, Shamieka became the district court supervisor over all Durham district courts.

In 2015, Shamieka used the lessons learned from her family, Rocky Mount and Durham communities coupled with her experiences and reputation as a prosecutor to launch a successful campaign for District Court Judge. On January 1, 2017, Shamieka was sworn in as District Court Judge for Durham County. During her time as District Court Judge, Shamieka presided over several district courts, including, but not limited to, Traffic Court, Domestic Violence Court and Abuse, Neglect and Dependency.

In 2022, Shamieka sought an appointment to Superior Court for the vacancy created by the retirement of The Honorable Orlando F. Hudson, Jr. On February 8, 2023, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced the appointment of Shamieka to North Carolina Superior Court, where she currently presides over felony and civil cases across North Carolina.
